Minority Teachers Celebration

The Baldwin County Minority Teachers Celebration was well attended earlier this month. Organized and hosted by the EMI Community Development Program, it included welcoming statements from the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Eddie Tyler; and from Mr Eric West, head of the system's HR department. Mobile University's Gospel ensemble Dunamis (Greek for Power) performed several songs. Volunteer leaders in the Community Development program found two causes for the lack of minority teachers in Baldwin schools. The system had an unwarranted but lingering reputation for hostility to minority teachers; and its personnel had minimal understanding of how to reach out to minority communities. The Celebration is a significant step in correcting both weaknesses. Studies show that the presence of minority teachers universally improves attendance, college ambitions, equitable discipline and decreases drop-out rates.
